DISSECTION POSTER PROJECTS

Phase One

For the first part of the project, we were tasked with finding a informational flyer or a magazine page, a dissecting it's components to be represented in two graphic diagrams.  The first diagram should represent the function and content of the page, while the second poster should display the graphic components.  Both diagrams needed to be representative of the original page as a whole.

Below is my first attempt at this project.  I had never worked with any imaging software before this project, and it shows.  My first challenge was learning how to use the tools and editing features of Photoshop and Illustrator.  I ended up getting lost in the magazine page, and ended up doing a poor recreation of the page, and did not properly meet the requirements of the assignment.

For my reiteration, I focused on why I had chosen this magazine page and what had drawn me to it.  I ended up breaking down the componets after seriously studying the page and writing down what had caught my eye.  Both sides of the page, the graphic and the content were often intertwinned with each other.  What I found in the relationships between shadow, tecture and color, to the boldness of the text was inportant to representing not only the photograph, but the style of the photographer as well.

Phase Two

The next step of the project was to take the skills we learned from the posters and apply those findings to dissasembleing a product.  Documentation of the object as a whole and in parts was required.  It was prudent to consider function of the form, single entities creating a whole, inside/outside, order and sequence, as well as hierarchy.  These elements then needed to be portrayed in a graphic poster.

My product was an old Sears radio and cassette player.  After taking the radio apart, I came upon what looked like a giant tangled mess of wires.  However, after untangling the mess, it really was not a mess at all.  There was an organization behind the madness, and it probablly took some skill for a worker to put the radio together by hand.  Sketching out the mechanisims helped me to understand the organization.  Very little is exposed to the user, and the product, for the technology, was very efficient for how small it is, performing multiple tasks.
