LINEAR/PLANAR TECTONIC FORM

The goal of this project was to continue our exploration of hierarchy through the intersection of lines and planes.  This would create a three demential space through tectonic relationships.  These relationships brought out many qualities in the material such as patterns in light and shadow.  It took quite a few iterations and experimentation before I created a form that better embodied those elements.

For my first iteration, I decided to focus on pattern to create movement.  I decided to start with one basic shape to create the form, manipulating triangle at different angles to see what effects in light and shadow I could achieve.  I came to this design because I wanted to use the individual pieces to come together to create one whole.  This also allowed for the ugly spot welds used to hold the pieces together to be covered up.  However, I discovered that this made the interaction between the form and the ground plane uneven, upsetting the  implied circle I had hoped to create.

In my second iteration, I decided to avoid spot welds altogether and created a form from one single piece of sheet metal.  After practicing in paper, I copied the form in the metal.  I found that because the metal does not bend at as sharp of an angle as the paper, the pattern I wished to bring out in the form was lost.  This caused issues with effects in light and shadow, as well as how the form made contact with the ground plane.

For  my third iteration, I believed that in order to create the pattern I wanted it would be best to go back to using multiple pieces.  However, to simplify and relieve stress on myself and the form, I enlarged the pieces and had fewer of them.  With changes in scale between pieces, the form was able to have an implied hierarchy depending on what orientation the form was set in.  The bends in the metal come together with dark lines that the eye likes to follow, creating a focal point in the center of the form. The end conditions being points also has the implication that the form continues outward past what is physically there to see.  This form also has the ability to be turned on different axises so that there was a more complex relationship between the form and the ground plane. This also allows for different effects in lighting and shadows to take place.
